A circular medal constructed of silver, the obverse bears the right facing bust of Duke Charles Edward, circumscribed with CARL EDVARD HERZOG SACHSEN COBURG GOTHA, encompassed by a laurel leaf border, the reverse centre bears the inscription FUR KUNST UND WISSENSCHAFT (FOR ART AND SCIENCE) within an octagonal pearled border within an oak leaf border, measuring 32. 59
